Top Things to do BEFORE Your Laser Frenectomy!

Do you want to get the most out of your child's laser frenectomy? Follow these tips to get your infant ready for release!

  1. Secure Lactation / Feeding Support - Addressing the latch, positioning, oral function and feeding skills prior to release, is imperative for adequate progress and improving outcomes. An IBCLC also plays a critical role in addressing maternal factors and creating a plan with Mom & Baby with regard to feeding/pumping before and after the frenectomy procedure. For infants with feeding concerns, we require all families work with an IBCLC prior to an infant frenectomy procedure. For little ones over 3 months of age, we ask that all families be in treatment with a Feeding Therapist. Feeding Therapy will help your baby get reoriented to the newfound freedom of the oral tissues.

  2. Get Bodywork - The entire body is interconnected and needs to be addressed. Bodywork specialists - including pediatric physical therapists, infant massage specialists, craniosacral therapists or chiropractors - can help prepare babies for the procedure and ensure that they have an easier time with managing their new anatomy after the procedure. Bodywork before laser frenectomy is essential for optimal results. This includes neuromuscular control, coordination, strength, tone and range of motion to whole body movement synergies. Need a referral? We have an amazing group of providers we love working with and would be happy to share their information!

  3. Determine Optimal Time of Release - Incorporating therapeutic intervention and procedure preparation in the right sequence has a more positive impact on optimal outcomes than just doing treatment by a specific time. There is a specific time that is optimal for each baby that has to be determined by professionals, like Dr. Allie and other providers on her collaborative care team.
